Lean Manufacturing is both an old a and a new idea. Based on principles Toyota formulated in the 1930s, coined as a term in the 1990s by John Krafcik, this methodology tries to optimize the Value Stream.
Another term for this concept is Just In Time production/manufacturing (short JIT), which better hints at the idea of Demand-Driven execution of production.
While this idea originates in physical manufacturing, it is one of the founding concepts behind the DevOps idea.
